Room for 40-60?
This was a prison room for 40-60 prisoners. From 1963-1979, there were no windows in any of the rooms. When the wind blew, much dust would fly in, and this would adversely affect their health--TB was one of the effects. Another consequence was the rain and cold that would come in. The prisoners slept on the floor, and they would be chilled.
In 1977 or so, the international press was allowed on the island. The International Red Cross and other agencies insisted that bunk beds and windows be added to the cells and rooms. Dumisami was thankful, even today, for the international community's eyes on them.
