In cricket, you can use the flat face of the bat to send the ball in any direction, because all 360° around the batter are in play. The net result is that several times during a game the fielding team has to sprint at full speed to prevent a ball from reaching the boundary after it was hit into wide open space. In this instance, the batter is playing a shot to his left.
