CPUT students were Toyi-Toying today on campus in protest of conditions in the residence halls. This has been brewing for a while. The recent protests began on Monday, and I heard it again today. I missed the excitement on Tuesday.
Today, I was in my office and heard particularly loud chanting followed by screaming. I didn't see anything. No gunshots, though. Thereafter, it was pretty quiet. I went to teach at 14h00. After class, I left the Engineering Building, which was, by then, mostly deserted. I ran into someone from the administration who said that all evening classes were cancelled due to the protests. He also said that the students were "in negotiations" with the administration. No one was allowed into the building.
Many of my colleagues were gone from campus most of the day, possibly because they wanted to avoid the disruptions, although I don't know for sure.
This evening, there was a fantastic sunset as the sun lit up clouds over the mountains. See the photos below.
Now, I'm headed for the airport to pick up my parents.
