Rapids
After leaving Richie Falls, we moved downstream through one small rapid (42-man hole) and on to Big Bunny. The Rabbit, as it is also called, is the longest, steepest, and fastest rapids we crossed on this trip. We took it in three steps.
First, Jess gave a briefing atop the rocks that you see in the background. From that location, it is possible to see the best line and plan in your mind how you'll navigate. We learned that the entry to the rapids is absolutely crucial. Not only must you enter at the right location, but you must start in a good direction, too. We saw some "holes," whirlpools that are likely to cause difficulty if entered. And, we saw large rocks that can cause problems. Jess helpfully said that the rapids will look very different from the river compared to the shore. Second, four guides (except Jess) took their crocs through, showing us the line and how to paddle through the difficult parts. Third, we did it ourselves.
James (solo) went first, and Ben and I were second. After Ben and I finished, I pulled out my Nikon camera, installed the long lens (300 mm), and fired away. So, I was able to photograph all the boats except James, ourselves, and Grant/Matt (who followed quickly after Ben and me).
