On top of the ridge and almost directly over the tunnel sits an old English fort that dates from the Anglo-Boer War. When you're driving East through the pass (like we did with Cynthia), there is a small sign that says "Old English Fort, 1896," but you can't see it.

Because I wanted to take photos of the rock formations, we stopped on the side of the road near the tunnel. As I got out to take photos, and Mark said, "There's the fort." We decided to explore: we had a little time, because Catherine was asleep in the car and Tracy was content to stay with her.

We found a narrow trail up to the fort on the opposite side of the highway, and we scrambled up, maybe 50 m. The fort is very small, barely large enough to hold a dining room table. It has no roof. But there are embrasures in the walls to allow soldiers to fire on enemies.
